Now Playing on UVtv: Open Final - Rhino vs Dragon (20 minutes) For the past few years, the North West region has been alternating between 3 and 4 open bids for the UPA Club Championships. With Furious, Sockeye and JAM consistently making the quarters and semis since 2003, three bids have been assured. What the NW hasn’t been able to produce is a 4th seed capable of making quarters. That may change in 2006 with Rhino charging on to the scene. |

Now Playing on UVtv: Kids Showcase game and Women's Flowerbowl Final Furious vs George; While this may look like a typo, this was in fact the semi final match up at Flowerbowl this past weekend in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. When asked how the teams were put together, Andrew Lugsdin explained that once Jeff Cruickshank and Albob had left the Furious George captains meeting, that he, Mike Grant and Oscar Pottinger decided the three of them would play Furious, leaving Jeff and Albob to anchor George. They then proceeded to divide the remaining players as evenly as they could and wrote it all down on the back of a receipt. Were the teams even? The fact that Furious beat George 15-9 in the semis might suggest they were not.
Never mind the obvious bias during the selection process; I would contend that just putting Mike and Andrew together tipped the scales in favor of Furious. Few teams can contend with the combination of height, speed and throws that these two possess. George threw Duncan McDonald at Lugsdin, (highlights) while Mark Seraglia had the dubious job of shutting down his good friend Grant. But Mike got the better of that match up (highlights) and Andrew contributed regardless of his defender. Alex Hughes, a 2nd year player out of UBC, also stepped up for Furious with two big catches, including the game winner. (highlights)
